How to request a payment by SMS from a conversation (text-to-pay)

In Conversations, open the customer's conversation, pick the SMS channel and click Request Payment ($ icon). Choose the product, confirm the price, discount, tax and due date, then click Send. The customer gets a payment link by text and pays in a few taps.

Updated on

Before you start

  • Stripe must be connected under Payments › Integrations.
  • Your account needs an active phone number to send SMS.
  • At least one active product must exist in Payments › Products.
  • The contact needs a mobile number on their record.
Where to find it

Conversations › (customer's conversation) › SMS channel › Request Payment ($ icon)

Step by step

  1. In the left menu, open Conversations and open the conversation with the customer you want to charge.
  2. In the message box, pick the SMS channel.
  3. Click Request Payment ($ icon) below the text editor.
  4. In the window that opens, choose the product and confirm the price.
  5. If needed, add a discount and/or tax.
  6. Set the payment due date.
  7. Choose Live mode. Use Test mode only to try the flow without charging.
  8. Click Preview to see the checkout page the way the customer will.
  9. Click Send. The text with the link goes to the customer and is logged in the conversation.
  1. Instead of Send, click Copy link & Mark as sent.
  2. Paste the link wherever you like (WhatsApp, email, a note). The request is logged as sent in the conversation.

Tips

  • The checkout page can carry your brand colors and logo: set that up in the payment link settings.
  • The request stays tied to the contact's conversation, which makes it easy to track who has paid.
  • Use the due date to create urgency and avoid forgotten requests.

Common problems

  • The Request Payment button doesn't show → Make sure the selected channel is SMS, Stripe is connected and the account has an active phone number.
  • The product list is empty → Create at least one active product in Payments › Products.
  • The customer says the payment isn't accepted → Check whether you sent the request in Test mode. Create a new one in Live mode.
  • The text never arrived → Check the contact's number and see the article on undelivered SMS.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I see whether the customer paid?

In Payments › Transactions and in the conversation history itself.

Can I request an amount without a product?

No. A request always starts from a product; create a product with the amount you need (e.g. "Deposit") in Payments › Products.
