How to disable a workflow action without deleting it
In the builder, hover over the action and click the toggle (pause icon) to disable it. The action turns gray with a Disabled label and is skipped when contacts go through; the following actions still run. Switch the toggle back on to re-enable it.
Updated on
Before you start
- Open the workflow in the builder. This works in both the standard and the advanced builder.
- Identify the action (or actions) you want to stop running for now.
Where to find it
Automation › Workflows › (open the workflow) › (hover over the action) › Enable/Disable toggle
Step by step
- Open the workflow in Automation › Workflows.
- Hover over the action you want to disable.
- Click the toggle (pause icon) that appears on the action.
- The action turns gray with a Disabled label.
- Save and publish. From then on, contacts skip that action and move on to the next one.
- To re-enable it, hover over the action and click the toggle again; the action runs again exactly as configured.
Tips
- It's the safest way to test: disable the SMS or email send, run a test contact, check Execution Logs (the action shows as Skipped) and re-enable it at the end.
- To disable a whole branch, disable each action in that branch; the connections between them stay intact.
- This is different from pausing workflows on dates: here you pause a single step of one workflow; the date pause stops entire workflows.
- Disabled actions don't consume executions.
Common problems
- Do contacts get stuck? → No. Even if the disabled action is the only path, the contact skips it and continues through the next active actions.
- The toggle doesn't appear → Hover right over the action; the toggle only shows on hover. Make sure you're in the builder, not the workflows list.
- Switching to the standard builder asks me to delete or re-enable actions → With disabled actions in the advanced builder, you must re-enable or delete them before switching builders.
- I want to disable many actions at once → There's no bulk disable; do it one by one.
