How to pause workflows on holidays or specific dates

Go to Automation › Workflows › Global Workflow Settings › Pause Workflow, pick the start and end date and time, select the published workflows to pause and save. Tick Annually to repeat every year. During the pause, contacts still enter but wait until the period ends.

Updated on

Before you start

  • Only published workflows can be paused. Publish the ones you want to include first.
  • Note your dates: each pause period can last at most 15 days, and the same workflow can't be in two overlapping periods.
Where to find it

Automation › Workflows › Global Workflow Settings › Pause Workflow

Step by step

  1. Open Automation › Workflows and click Global Workflow Settings (also reachable from Settings › Automation).
  2. Scroll down to the Pause Workflow section.
  3. Click the Start Date and Time field and pick the start and end of the period; click Confirm.
  4. In Select Workflows, choose one, several or All Published Workflows.
  5. If the pause repeats every year (e.g. Christmas), tick Annually on that row.
  6. For another period, click Add Date and repeat (up to 15 periods). Use the clone icon to copy a row and the delete icon to remove it.
  7. Save. During the period, the workflows show the Paused status in the list and resume on their own when it ends.

Tips

  • Inside each workflow, under Settings, the Pause Workflow section shows the periods when that workflow will be paused.
  • Contacts keep entering the workflow during the pause; they wait at the trigger or at the first action and continue when the pause ends. Wait and If/Else actions at the start are still processed; the stop happens at the next action.
  • To stop an automation for good, don't use the pause: switch the workflow to draft.

Common problems

  • The workflow doesn't show up to select → It's in draft. Only published workflows can be paused.
  • It won't let me save the period → The period is longer than 15 days or overlaps another one with the same workflow. Split it or adjust the dates.
  • Contacts that came in during the pause got everything at once afterwards → That's expected: pending actions run when the pause ends. If you don't want that, remove them from the workflow before the pause ends.
  • The pause didn't repeat this year → Annually wasn't ticked on that row. Tick it and save.
