Courses and memberships

What the members area is and how courses work

In Memberships › Courses you build courses with modules and lessons, bundle them into an offer (free or paid), and students sign in to the members area with their email and password. Access is granted by a purchase, by a workflow, or manually from the contact record.

Before you start

  • You need access to Memberships in your account.
  • If you plan to sell courses, have a payment provider connected in Payments › Integrations (for example, Stripe).
  • Prepare your content: videos, text, PDFs, quiz questions.
Where to find it

Memberships › Courses

Step by step

The members area is built on three pieces: the course (the content), the offer (how access is granted) and the student (the contact who receives access). The full flow looks like this:

  1. Create the course in Memberships › Courses › Products. Each course is organized into modules (categories) and lessons, and each lesson can hold video, audio, text, downloadable files, quizzes and assignments.
  2. Create an offer in Courses › Offers. The offer bundles one or more courses and defines how people get in: free, one-time payment or recurring payment. The offer must be Published before it can be used.
  3. Grant access to students in one of these ways:
    • Through a purchase: a product in Payments › Products linked to the offer unlocks access as soon as payment completes.
    • Through automation: a workflow with the Course Grant Offer action (for example, after a form submission).
    • Manually: from the contact record, by selecting the offer.
  4. The student signs in: they receive an email with a secure link, set their own password and land in the members area, where they see every course they have access to. The members area is part of the Client Portal, where your customer also finds your business's other resources.
  5. Track results: the Dashboard and Analytics in Courses show enrollments, progress, completions and revenue.

Tips

  • One course can belong to several offers (for example, on its own and inside a bundle).
  • Courses can also be made available inside Communities, in a group's learning area.
  • Lesson videos accept files up to 5 GB; other file types have different limits.
  • In the Courses screens, some button names may vary slightly depending on your account version.

Common problems

  • I don't see Memberships in the left menu → Your user doesn't have permission for this area. Ask an account administrator to enable it in Settings › My Staff.
  • The customer paid but has no access to the course → The product sold isn't linked to a published offer. Open the product and turn on the Membership Offer option.
  • The student never got the access email → Check the email on the contact record and look in the spam folder. The email only goes out once the contact is granted an offer.
