How to create and link companies automatically from the contact's business name

In Settings › Objects › Companies, enable the option to create and associate companies from the contact's business name and save. From then on, whenever a contact is created or updated (including CSV imports with a Business Name column), the company is created or updated and linked to the contact.

Updated on

Before you start

  • You need admin access to change the Companies object settings.
  • The contacts (or the CSV you will import) must have the Business Name field filled in: that value is what creates and links the company.
  • Contacts and companies are imported separately; this automation is how you connect them in a single contact import.
Where to find it

Settings › Objects › Companies › Automations

Step by step

Enable the automation

  1. In the left menu, open Settings and click Objects.
  2. In the list of standard objects, open Companies.
  3. Under Automations, check the option to automatically create and associate companies from contact business names.
  4. Click Save. Without saving, the automation doesn't take effect.

Import contacts with their companies

  1. In your contacts CSV, include a column named exactly Business Name with each contact's company name. No company-specific columns are needed.
  2. In Contacts, click Import and choose Contacts.
  3. Upload the file.
  4. Choose Create and update contacts so the automation applies to new and existing contacts alike.
  5. In the column mapping, confirm the Business Name column is mapped to the contact's Business Name field.
  6. Finish the import.

Check the result

  1. Open an imported contact and, in the right panel, open Associations: the company shows as the primary company.
  2. In Contacts › Companies, confirm the companies were created with the names from your file.
  3. To complete the company data (website, address, custom fields), export the companies, fill in the columns and import them back in Update mode.

Tips

  • The automation also works retroactively: contacts that already had a Business Name get linked once you turn it on.
  • Spell the company name the same way every time (for example "Smile Clinic", not "smile clinic" in one row and "Smile Clinic LLC" in another) to avoid duplicate companies.

Common problems

  • I imported contacts and no company was created → The automation wasn't enabled or wasn't saved. Enable it in Settings › Objects › Companies and import again in Create and update mode.
  • The column didn't link to a company → The header wasn't "Business Name" or it was mapped to a different field. Fix the mapping during the import.
  • Duplicate companies were created → The names were spelled differently. Standardize the names in the file and delete the duplicates.
  • I only wanted to import companies, no contacts → This automation needs contacts. To import companies alone, use the company import in Contacts › Companies.

Frequently asked questions

Does it also work when I create a contact manually?

Yes. Whenever a contact is created or updated with a Business Name, the company is created (if it doesn't exist) and linked.

Can I turn the automation off later?

Yes, by unchecking the option and saving. Companies and links already created are kept.
