How to issue a certificate automatically on course completion
Open the course in Memberships › Courses › Products, go to the Certificates tab, click Attach, choose the template (category Course Completion) and save. Every student who completes 100% of the course gets the certificate by email; issued ones are listed under Certificates › Issued Certificates.
Updated on
Before you start
- You already have a template created in Memberships › Certificates.
- The course exists in Courses › Products with its lessons published.
- Keep in mind: the certificate is only issued when the course (or module) is 100% complete.
Where to find it
Memberships › Courses › Products › (open the course) › Certificates › Attach
Step by step
Attach the completion certificate to the course
- Open Memberships › Courses › Products and click the course.
- Go to the Certificates tab.
- Click Attach and select the certificate template.
- The category defaults to Course Completion.
- Click Save. From now on, every student who completes the course automatically gets an email with a link to view and download the certificate.
- To see what's been issued, open Memberships › Certificates › Issued Certificates.
Use or swap the default certificate
- Every new course already comes with a default completion certificate.
- To change the template, click the three-dot menu in the Course Completion Certificate section and choose Edit Certificate or Choose Certificate.
- If you don't want a certificate on that course, choose Delete from the same menu, or click the Published status and switch it to Draft.
Issue a certificate per module (category)
- In the course, select the category (module) you want to certify.
- Click the + icon to attach a certificate to that category.
- The certificate appears as the last item in the module and is awarded when every required lesson in that module is complete. It can't be moved: it always stays at the end of the category.
Tips
- Only one completion certificate can be attached per course at a time. To swap it, edit the current one or delete it and attach another.
- If you mark the certificate inactive, it stops being sent until you activate it again.
- Students can copy their certificate link and share it publicly.
- To reward students who pass a quiz, use a workflow with the assessment trigger and the issue certificate action.
Common problems
- The student finished but got no certificate → The course isn't 100% complete (a lesson, quiz or assignment is still open), or the certificate is inactive or in Draft. Check the student's progress under Analytics and the certificate status on the course.
- I want to stop the certificate for one specific student → Under Certificates › Issued Certificates, open the three-dot menu on the student's row and choose Revoke Access. The student can no longer open the certificate.
- I can't attach a second completion certificate → Only one is allowed per course. Use category certificates if you want to reward modules.
- The module certificate shows up in the middle of the lessons → It doesn't: it always sits at the end of the category and can't be dragged.
Frequently asked questions
Is the certificate sent to students who completed before I attached it?
It's sent to students who complete the course after the certificate is attached. For earlier ones, send it manually from Certificates.
Can I see who has received it?
Yes, under Memberships › Certificates › Issued Certificates.
