How to create a countdown timer and use it in emails and pages

Under Marketing › Countdown Timers, click New, pick a template, the Fixed type, the end date and time and the timezone, set the active link and the expired link, style it and save. Then add the Countdown Timer element in the email or funnel editor, or copy the code for another website.

Before you start

  • Decide the end date and time of the promotion or event and the timezone.
  • Have both destinations ready: the page people go to while the timer is active and the page for when it expires (e.g. "offer ended").
  • To use it in emails or pages you need access to Marketing › Emails or to Sites.
Where to find it

Marketing › Countdown Timers › New

Step by step

Create the timer

  1. In the left menu, open Marketing and click Countdown Timers.
  2. Click New.
  3. Pick a design template and click Continue with this template.
  4. On the General tab, under Timer Type, choose Fixed (ends at one date and time for everyone).
  5. Set the end date and time and the time zone. If you want each visitor to see the deadline in their local time, turn on Adapt to Contact Time Zone.
  6. Under Links, paste the Active Link (destination while counting) and the Expired Link (destination after it reaches zero).
  7. Click Styling to change colors (counter, labels, separators, background), font, the time units shown (days, hours, minutes, seconds) and the image displayed after expiry. The color picker includes your brand board colors.
  8. Click the name at the top to rename the timer, then click Save.

Use it in an email

  1. Open Marketing › Emails › Templates (or a campaign) and go into the design editor.
  2. Drag the Countdown Timer element into the email and pick the timer you created.
  3. Adjust the alignment, background color and padding.
  4. Copy the timer's redirection link and use it on the email buttons, so clicks go to the right page (active or expired).

Use it in a funnel or website

  1. Open Sites › Funnels (or Websites) and edit the page.
  2. Click the + to add an element, choose Countdown Timers, select the timer and drag it into the section.
  3. For another site (WordPress, Wix…): under Countdown Timers, open the timer, click Copy Code and paste it into a custom code block on that site.
  4. Publish the page.

Tips

  • Any change to the timer applies everywhere it's placed, with no need to re-insert it.
  • The same timer can live in several emails and pages; with it on the email's landing page, the customer sees the same deadline in both.
  • To edit, click the pencil icon next to the timer under Countdown Timers.

Common problems

  • The timer in the email doesn't move or always shows the same time → In emails the timer is an image generated on open; some email clients (such as Apple Mail) cache the image and don't refresh it. Test in another client before assuming it's broken.
  • The email button goes to the active page after expiry → The button uses the page's direct link, not the timer's redirection link. Swap it for the redirection link.
  • The end time doesn't match mine → Check the timezone chosen on the timer and whether you turned on contact timezone adaptation.
  • The timer doesn't show on the page → Make sure you picked the right timer in the element and published the page; if you used code, check you pasted the full snippet.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when it reaches zero?

On a page, the visitor is sent to the expired link (or sees the expiry image); in an email, clicking the redirection link goes to the expired page.

What if the promotion repeats weekly or is per customer?

Use the Recurring type (resets each cycle) or Dynamic type (an individual deadline per contact). See the related article.
