Before you start

  • Only admins can delete and restore contacts.
  • Deleted contacts can be restored for 60 days. After that they're permanently removed.
  • When you delete a contact, related data (conversations, notes, tasks, history) may also be deleted and might not all come back when you restore. Export your contacts to CSV before deleting if you need to keep that information.
  • Deleted contacts are removed from all campaigns, workflows and lists.
Where to find it

Contacts › Smart Lists › three-dot menu next to Add Contact › Restore

Step by step

Delete contacts

  1. In the left menu, click Contacts and open the Smart Lists tab.
  2. Check the box to the left of the contact (or several contacts). To select all, use the box in the table header.
  3. Click the Delete icon (trash can) in the action bar. The icon only appears after you select contacts.
  4. Type DELETE in the confirmation box and confirm.
  5. You can track the deletion in Contacts › Bulk Actions.

Restore one or a few contacts

  1. In Contacts, click the three-dot menu next to Add Contact in the top-right corner.
  2. Choose Restore. You'll see the list of deleted contacts with name, email, phone and deletion date.
  3. Check the boxes for the contacts to recover (or all of them).
  4. Click Restore and confirm in the window, which shows how many contacts will be recovered.
  5. Go back to Contacts and check that the contacts are back.

Undo a bulk delete

  1. Go to Contacts › Bulk Actions.
  2. Find the contact deletion action you want to reverse.
  3. Click that row's three-dot menu and choose Restore.
  4. Confirm by clicking Restore again. A new restore action is created; its status changes from "In Progress" to "Completed". With many contacts, it can take a few minutes.

Tips

  • To remove contacts automatically (for example, people who asked to be removed), use the Delete Contact action in a workflow in Automation › Workflows.
  • If you just want to stop messaging someone, you don't need to delete them: turn on DND on their contact record.

Common problems

  • The delete icon doesn't appear → Select at least one contact first. If it still doesn't appear, your user isn't an admin.
  • I can't delete a contact → You may not have admin permission, or the contact is in an active campaign or workflow. Remove them from the campaign or workflow and try again.
  • The contact isn't in the restore list → More than 60 days have passed since it was deleted; it can no longer be recovered.
  • I restored the contact but conversations or notes are missing → Some related data may not come back on restore. Recover what you can from an export made before deleting.
  • I selected all to restore but some contacts are missing → "Select all" only includes contacts on the visible page. Increase rows per page or repeat on each page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I restore contacts someone else deleted?

Yes, as long as it's within 60 days and you have admin access.

Which bulk actions can be restored?

Only contact deletion. Email and SMS sends, email verification, adding contacts to companies and adding tags can't be restored.
