How to create channels in a group (public, private and announcement)
Inside the group, click + Add Channel in the left panel, give it a short name, a description and an icon or emoji, then click Create Channel. Turn on Make this Channel Private to limit it to chosen members, or enable Announcement Channel so only admins can post.

Before you start
- You must be the group owner or an admin. Only these roles create channels.
- Think of a name (short, up to 15 characters) and a one-line description (up to 60 characters).
- Decide the type: public (every member sees it), private (only people you add) or announcement (everyone reads, only admins post).
Where to find it
Memberships › Communities › Groups › (open the group) › + Add Channel
Step by step
Create a channel
- Open Memberships › Communities and enter the group.
- In the left panel, click + Add Channel.
- Enter the channel name (e.g. "Questions", "Announcements", "VIP").
- Write a short description so members know what's discussed there.
- Pick an icon or emoji so the channel stands out in the list.
- If the channel should be for selected members only, turn on Make this Channel Private.
- Click Create Channel.
Create an announcement channel (admins only can post)
- Open the group's channel management and click Create Channel, or edit an existing channel.
- Enable Announcement Channel.
- Choose whether the channel is public or private.
- Save. Members now see the channel as read-only: they can read and react but have no composer.
- Publish your first announcement and pin it if you want it to stay at the top.
Manage members of a private channel
- Open the channel and click the gear icon (settings).
- Go to the Members tab.
- To add someone, search their name and add them.
- To remove someone, click the three dots next to their name and choose Remove from Channel.
Switch a channel between public and private
- Open the channel and click the gear icon.
- On the Settings tab, click Make Channel Private or Make Channel Public.
- Read the notice and click Confirm.
Change the icon or emoji
- Open the channel and click the gear icon.
- Click Edit next to the channel name.
- Under Channel Icon, choose an emoji or an icon and click Save.
Tips
- The group owner and the person who creates the channel automatically become channel managers. Inside a private channel, the channel manager is in charge; group admin roles don't apply there.
- A private channel doesn't show up in the list for people who aren't in it. When you make a private channel public, its whole history becomes visible to the entire group.
- To grant private channel access automatically (for example after a purchase), use a workflow under Automation › Workflows: there are actions to grant and revoke private channel access.
- You can turn off announcement mode any time; the channel goes back to being a normal discussion channel.
Common problems
- A member can't see the channel → The channel is private and they haven't been added. Go to the gear › Members and add them.
- Members keep posting in the announcements channel → Announcement Channel isn't enabled. Edit the channel and turn it on.
- I don't see the + Add Channel button → Your role in the group is contributor. Ask an admin to change your role.
- The channel name won't fit → The limit is 15 characters. Use a short name and put the rest in the description.
- I can't leave a private channel → The group owner can't leave private channels; other members can.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have several announcement channels?
